Gold used for Maki-E. The gold employed in the Maki-E is exceptionally unique. The gold flakes are miraculously thin, varying in thickness between 1/10000mm and 3/1000mm. The gold is cut into tiny pieces and then a special wood needle is used to place the flakes piece by piece onto the base by a master's hand.

The gold flakes used for the maki-E are expensive and available only from two makers, one in Tokyo and the other in Kanazawa. There are 15-30 different shapes and sizes of flakes; the cost is approximately $3,000.00/oz. - more than ten times that of gold on the market.
